JPS Correctional pharmacy is one of the VytlOne-managed pharmacies in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Responsibilities

The Lead Pharmacy Technician possesses a full proficiency in all areas in the pharmacy and is able to apply a thorough knowledge of the competencies described in the Essential Functions below.

  • Employee maintains order and efficiency in the lobby area. May also assist with providing direction and assistance for patients in need of services beyond the pharmacy.
  • Employee demonstrates a thorough knowledge of working with diverse patient populations and can identify nonverbal gestures (e.g., body language) which can positively or negatively affect verbal communication.
  • Employee answers telephone quickly and with courtesy, per site guidelines.
  • Employee works cooperatively with other staff members
  • Employee demonstrates understanding of operating the cash register and accurately ringing up sales.
  • Employee inform patient of any notations on prescription bag.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of effective and professional verbal communication skills with multidisciplinary healthcare members and patients/customers (e.g., effective listening, feedback, using proper verbal syntax, and questioning).
  • Employee applies knowledge of effective telephone communication techniques/etiquette which comply with organizational protocols in both receiving and initiating calls.

 Pharmacology

  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of generic and brand names of pharmaceuticals.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of therapeutic equivalence.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of drug interactions (e.g., drug-disease, drug-drug, drug-dietary supplement, drug-OTC, drug- laboratory, drug-nutrient).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of strengths/dose, dosage forms, physical appearance, routes of administration, and duration of drug therapy.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of common and severe side or adverse effects, allergies, and therapeutic contraindications associated with medications.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of dosage and indication of legend, OTC medications, herbal and dietary.

 Pharmacy Law and Regulation

  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous substances and wastes (e.g., MSDS).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of hazardous substances exposure, prevention and treatment (e.g., eyewash, spill kit, MSDS).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of controlled substance transfer regulations (DEA).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of controlled substance documentation requirements for receiving, ordering, returning, loss/theft, destruction (DEA).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of formula to verify the validity of a prescriber’s DEA number (DEA).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of record keeping, documentation, and record retention (e.g., length of time prescriptions are maintained on file).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of restricted drug programs and related prescription-processing requirements (e.g., thalidomide, isotretinoin, clozapine).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of professional standards related to data integrity, security, and confidentiality (e.g., HIPAA, backing up and archiving).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of requirement for consultation (e.g., OBRA'90).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of FDA’s recall classification.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of infection control standards (e.g., laminar air flow, clean room, hand washing, cleaning counting trays, countertop, and equipment) (OSHA, USP 795 and 797).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of record keeping for repackaged and recalled products and supplies (TJC, BOP).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of professional standards regarding the roles and responsibilities of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other pharmacy employees (TJC, BOP).

  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of sterile compounding processes, including appropriate selection and use of equipment and supplies.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge documentation requirements associated with compounding (e.g., batch preparation, compounding record).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of handling and disposal requirements (e.g., receptacles, waste streams).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of determining product stability (e.g., beyond use dating, signs of incompatibility).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of non-sterile compounding processes.

 Medication Safety

  • Error prevention strategies for data entry (e.g., prescription or medication order to correct patient).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of patient package insert and medication guide requirements (e.g., special directions and precautions).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of how to identify issues that require pharmacist intervention (e.g., DUR, ADE, OTC recommendation, therapeutic substitution, misuse, missed dose).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of look-alike/sound-alike medications.
  • High-alert/risk medications.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of common safety strategies (e.g., tall man lettering, separating inventory, leading and trailing zeros, limit use of error prone abbreviations).

 Pharmacy Quality Assurance

  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of quality assurance practices for medication and inventory control systems (e.g., matching National Drug Code (NDC) number, bar code, data entry).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of infection control procedures and documentation (e.g., personal protective equipment [PPE], needle recapping).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of risk management guidelines and regulations (e.g., error prevention strategies).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of communication channels necessary to ensure appropriate follow-up and problem resolution (e.g., product recalls, shortages).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of productivity, efficiency, and customer satisfaction measures.

 

Medication Order Entry and Fill Process

  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of order entry process.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of Intake, interpretation, and data entry 6.3* calculate doses required.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of fill process (e.g., select appropriate product, apply special handling requirements, measure, and prepare product for final check)
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of labeling requirements (e.g., auxiliary and warning labels, expiration date, patient-specific information).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of packaging requirements (e.g., type of bags, syringes, glass, PVC, child resistant, light resistant)
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of dispensing process (e.g., validation, documentation and distribution).

 Pharmacy Inventory Management

  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of function and application of NDC, lot numbers and expiration dates
  • Employee understands thorough inventory control guidelines such as auditing receipt of goods, taking inventory, stocking, pricing, monitoring usage, and correcting pricing and quantities in the computer system.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of formulary or approved/preferred product list.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of ordering and receiving processes (e.g., maintain par levels, rotate stock).
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of storage requirements (e.g., refrigeration, freezer, warmer).
  • Employee demonstrates an understanding of removing (return to stock), picking up, and/or the delivery of drug orders.
  • Employee appropriately issues supplies to other pharmacies or departments as needed.
  • Employee applies a thorough knowledge of inventory removal (e.g., recalls, returns, outdates, reverse distribution).

Qualifications

  

Education & Experience:

  • Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s Degree is preferred but not required
  • Clear/Current Texas Pharmacy Technician License required
  • PTCB or NHA National Pharmacy Technician Certification required
  • Advanced certifications are a plus
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years equivalent experience
  • Experience as a Lead Pharmacy Technician highly preferred
  • Experience in multiple pharmacy environments preferred, comfortability working in a correctional environment is required.

  • Must possess problem solving skills and abilities
  • Ability to mentor/lead others
  • Ability to react to change positively
  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish is a plus
  • Ability to move from work station to work station with ease (based on site)
