    JOB SUMMARY:

     

    Under the general supervision of the Chief Pharmacy Officer, the Medication Safety Officer is responsible for monitoring the medication use process to ensure medication and patient safety and compliance with the State, Federal and regulatory agency’s medication management standards. This individual is responsible for assuming a leadership role in the Medication Error Reduction Plan (MERP) for the institution which requires collaboration with health providers with medication-related responsibilities to measure and improve the safety of the Health system’s medication system. Essential job functions include patient and medication safety, staff development/training, and medication use performance improvement.  Works closely with Pharmacy Leadership and Quality/Regulatory and shall work collaboratively with nursing, medical staff and other support staff.

    Responsibilities

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (These duties must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.  This document in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position):

     

    1. Provide continuous evaluation of medication use process for safety and efficiency.
    2. Collect, review, and evaluate medication event data.
    3. Implement medication safety initiatives.
    4. Document effectiveness of these initiatives in reducing medication events.
    5. Participate and assist in coordination of monthly Regulatory readiness meetings
    6. Coordinate a consistent and timely approach to medication-related event review and follow-up, including ensuring accurate documentation of root causes.
    7. Timely analysis of medication-related event trends.
    8. Monitoring of medication safety alerts from external bodies (ISMP, ASHP, etc.) and coordination of internal review and follow up.
    9. Coordinate the review and maintenance of medication safety metrics.
    10. Assist in the coordination of, and participate in, performance improvement initiatives to promote safe medication use.
    11. Support a medication safety culture within pharmacy department.
    12. Promptly report any allegations of impropriety to the Compliance Department.
    13. Develop, monitor and report Drug Diversion Program to key stakeholders and leaders.
    14. Coordinate investigational drug studies.
    15. Coordinate and support ACPE program for the hospital
    16. Develop and distribute reports to key leaders and committees within the system.
    17. Comply with Maxor’s Ethical Business Conduct policy and Maxor’s Compliance Program.
    18. Remain free from exclusion under the OIG and SAMS Medicare/Medicaid lists.
    19. Complete required training, as assigned, within the established timeframes.
    20. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
    21. Maintain regular attendance in accordance with established policies.
    22. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

     

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Education: Graduation from an accredited School of Pharmacy.  PharmD preferred.  Unencumbered Pharmacist license to practice in the State of Employment.  Pharmacotherapy Specialty Board Certification, preferred. 

    Experience: Prior medication safety experience in various pharmacy practice settings (i.e. retail, hospital, clinic) or certification in patient/medication safety or residency in medication safety

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

     

    1. Strong leadership ability and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    2. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws pertaining to the preparation, storage, procurement, use, administration, monitoring, and disposal of medications in the practice of Pharmacy in Texas.
    3. Thorough knowledge and experience with The Joint Commission (TJC), Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS), American society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) medication standards.
    4. Demonstrated experience in project management and process improvement.
    5. Demonstrated experience leading committees and groups in a complex organization.
    6. Proven ability in comprehension and interpretation of technical and scientific literature.
    7. Skill in writing articles, which are suitable for publication in professional journals and departmental newsletters.
    8. Ability to speak on a one-on-one basis using appropriate professional vocabulary and grammar to obtain information, explain policies and procedures, and to persuade others to accept or adopt a specific opinion or action.
    9. Ability to speak in front of audiences to provide educational material and present research findings in a cogent, concise, and effective manner.
    10. Skill in making appropriate job-related decisions following standard departmental and hospital policies.
    11. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other professional staff of JPS Health Network and Maxor
    12. Ability to set priorities which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities.
    13. Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal supervision.
    14. Knowledge of policies and procedures governing use and administration of medications of the JPS Health Network, Maxor and of the Department of Pharmacy Services.
    15. Demonstrated skill in writing routine correspondence, memoranda, procedures, and reports in a grammatically correct manner, easily understood by all employees.
    16. Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures and applicable state and federal regulations.
